Coolpad Note 3 : The Best Phone Under 10k

Coolpad was the first brand to launch a smartphone under 10k with 3Gb of RAM and a finger print scanner. This indeed changed the way we look at budget smartphones. This has pushed many smartphone manufacturers to push their limits and provide bang for our bucks.

  • 5.5″ HD IPS Display , 1280*720p , ppi of 267
  • A finger print sensor
  • 3 gb of RAM , 16 gb internal storage expandable via micro sd card and OTG
  • 13 mp auto focus rear camera and 5 mp front facing camera
  • Dual SIM 4G
  • 3000 mAh battery
  • 170 gm weight

On the front you have  earpiece ,an LED notification light ,5mp front facing camera and some sensors.
Below that there is a 5.5″ hd display i.e. 1280*720 pixels at a ppi of 267 .The display is protected by corning gorilla glass 3.Below the display there are three capacitive touch buttons but sadly they aren’t backlit. On the right side you have power on off switch , at the top a 3.5mm headphone jack ,on the left side of the smartphone you get volume up & down rockers and at the bottom a primary microphone and a micro usb port for data synching and charging. The buttons are quite tactile and easy to press. At the back side you have a 13 mp auto focus camera with a single LED flash and a secondary noise cancelling microphone.Below the camera you get finger print sensor and at bottom there is coolpad branding and speaker grill.
Opening the back panel gives you access to the two SIM card slots and a micro sd card slot. The battery on this device is 3000mAh and is  non user replacable.
The phone weighs at around 170gms and is mainly build out of plastic but you get
a nice metallic chrome finishing surrounding the front and the polishing has held really well and there is no wear and tear of polish during my one month of usage. The back panel is made up of smooth plastic and has curved design which makes the phone comfortable to hold in hand. But it is slightly slippery.

Though the display on this phone is 720p but  it can compete with most of the smartphones having FHD display in this price range. The display is bright, shows vivid colors and has great viewing angles.Colors are accurate and natural.Overall the display quality is really good and I was impressed by the quality of the display.

This phone runs on android 5.1 and has a custom skin called coolUI.There is no app drawer here meaning all the apps will be home screen. You can change the wallpaper with just a single tap via the toggle called rock wallpaper. Also there are some themes which helps in changing the look of the UI.You  can customise the look and feel of the UI by pressing and holding  the menu button. You can also record screen by pressing volume up button and power button simultaneously. One thing I noticed that you can’t select multiple messages to delete. It really is painful to delete messages one by one.Overall the UI is quite smooth and functional .

Call quality was nice and I was able to hear voice of other person clearly and also other person was able to hear my voice clearly.Sound via the speaker is good ,loud and crisp but it gets muffled if you put it on bed.

On the internals this phone is powered by mediatek mtk 6753 octa core 64 bit chipset clocked at 1.3Ghz each and coupled with mali t720 GPU.It has 3gb of RAM and 16 gb of internal storage but you can expand your storage via micro sd card and it also supports otg.Providing 3gb of RAM at such a low price is really great.
On AnTuTu benchmarks this phone was able to score over 36800 and in the real life there was no lag in opening and closing of apps.Device runs butter smooth and fast. But there is a small bug that causes to freeze the screen some times. You can just go back to home screen and refresh the deviceto get back to normal.

The finger print sensor is super amazing and blazing fast. The positioning is super convenient as your index finger automatically goes on the scannerYou can use this fingerprint scanner to unlock
the phone or launch any assigned app via just a single touch and believe me it has an accuracy of about 90% and it works really really well. You get this kind of finger print scanner on high end phones and flagships but now all other budget smartphones will start to put a fingerprint scanner on their phones. So we ,the customer, will win.

On gaming part this phone was able to handle all the games thrown at it without any issues.I was able to play high end games like asphalt 8 ,modern combat 5 ,mortal combat x and fifa 16 without any frame drops and lags. But when I tried to play NOVA 3 there were some frame drops at the end of first mission where it gets really graphic intensive. There were no heating issues that will make you uncomfortable while playing games. But it gets slightly warmer near fingerprint scanner. We got the maximum temperature of 42 degrees on this phone after playing games for 30 min.Overall I was satisfied with the gaming performance of this device.

The 3000 mAh battery was able to last for a day on a single charge.Note that gaming consumes a lot of battery on this smartphone.

On camera side it has 13 mp auto focus back camera with single LED flash and a 5mp front facing camera.
The camera on this phone is either a hit or a miss.Outdoor images shot with the back camera were good but not that great. If you shake the camera even a little bit then the image will come out to be blurry.Low light images have lot of noise but if you use flash in low lights the noise level was reduced and images were good.5mp front facing camera takes some good selfies in daylight and indoors where lighting is good otherwise there is some noise, but gets its job done . White balance on front camera was not accurate and it slightly overexposed images.Overall the camera quality is just okay or average.

Final verdict :-

So is this device worth your money or not? I would say yes for its price of just 8,999 and you are getting a whooping 3gb of RAM, a good display, good battery life ,no heating issues and great build quality.
Only downside is its camera and some software glitches like the LED glows for no reason and freezing of screen.
